IWSC 125th year show update
The Irish Water Spaniel Club has always set out to promote the breed since the origin of the club.The Committee set out in its 125th year to promote the breed this year and we were very successful as we had 17 dogs entered. We wish to thank our judge Mrs Liz Cooper for doing a great job and been so encouraging especially with our members who have never shown before.I would like to thank the Committee and their family members for their work on the day. Gun dog training and scurry 20th September 10:30 Dromin House, Dromin, Co. Louth
A club event coming up on the 20th of September at Dromin House, Dromin, County Louth.
The progamme starts at 10:30am with Gun Dog training run by our Field Trial Secretary Tony Sellars. This will be followed by a Scurry in the afternoon.
We really hope to get a great turn-out on the day. All are welcome and we’d especially like to see as many Irish Water Spaniels there as possible, so if you are an owner it would be fantastic if you could make it. Of course all breeds are welcome so do invite friends and family to come along!
Directions:
Access to the venue is very easy, just a two minute drive off the M1 motorway. Take exit 13 off the M1 towards Dunleer. Pass the Village Saloon pub on your left, follow the road on for approximately 1km to next crossroads and turn right. Dromin House is on the left after approx. 1km. There will be posters to guide once you turn off the motorway.
You are advised to bring lunch on the day and bring wellies!
A special date – 03/05/2015 – the Club celebrates its 125th year anniversary
On the 3rd of May the Irish Water Spaniel Club of Ireland will be celebrating a very special day, the 125th anniversary of the Club. Many of you will already know that the Club is amongst the oldest in the world but may not have been aware such a significant milestone was just around the corner.
We would encourage as many IWS owners as possible to enter the show but you can also just come along to watch, meet other IWS owners, club and committee members and catch up with what’s happening in the world of the IWS these days.
Entries Close 6th April 2015 for postal entries. Enter online at www.dogshowentry.ie, online entry closes at midnight on the 14th April 2015. Judge: Mrs. Elizabeth Cooper

AGM Sunday 19th October
The Clubs Annual General Meeting is being held on Sunday the 19th October in O’Conners Bar, Dunleer, County Louth at 14:00.
We welcome all existing members to attend but we’d also love to see new faces so if you’re a non member please come along too.
It is a great opportunity to catch up with those in the club and to get more involved in the future of the club especially with the Clubs 1 25th year anniversary coming up next year.

IWS Champ Show 13th Sept, Cloughran, Dublin – enter to show your dog or just come along to enjoy
This year the Irish Water Spaniel Club will be running their Champ Show in conjunction with the Irish Breeds Show at Cloughran on the 13th September. We would like to see many Irish Water Spaniels take part so even if you have never entered a show ring before, this is your chance to show off your dog or bitch and to let everyone see that Irish Water Spaniels may come in all shapes and sizes but are all amazing!
Last year only three dogs were entered – this was very disappointing as we know there are many more who could have appeared in the ring.
Entries will still be received if entered on line. The closing date for on- line entries is midnight on the 31st August. follow this link http://www.dogshowentry.ie/OnlineEntries/Public/AvailableShows.aspx, go to “dogshowentries” and click on “Irish Breeds Show” and the entry form column is on the right of the page. The fee for entering one dog or bitch is 18 euros or £18.00. Judging will commence at 12.30 sharp.
However, showing is optional! Please come along on the day and find out what’s involved….and maybe next year we’ll see many of you take the plunge into showing? it’s a great day out and is also an opportunity to see all the other Irish breeds as well as Irish Water Spaniels.
IWSC at the Shane’s Castle Games Fair
We had a very successful weekend at the Shane’s Castle Games Fair this year. Committee members had a full IWSC stand in operation and fielded questions throughout both days. There was great interest in the breed in general, we managed to sell some merchandise and had several enquiries from potential new club members. Well done to all involved volunteering their time to help out. A special thanks goes to our very own Committee member John Dorian and in particular his wonderful children who through their gift of the gab brought in much needed funds for the club – it seems will all make extremely good salesmen when they grow up!
What a day!
We had sunshine, rain and hail but not even the bizarre May weather could stop us from having an amazing day. By all accounts the Club fun day was a roaring success. We had our grooming demonstration, scurries, agility class, dog shows and an obedience talk. Add in a dozen or so Irish Water Spaniels and many other breeds of dog with people who travelled from far and wide, from all corners of the country, from the very north to the very south, and there’s no denying what a great day it was.
Irish Water Spaniel owners old and new alike met and along with a large number of non-IWS owners just along for a fun day out, shared stories, information, laughter and the odd curse at the weather but by in large had a wonderful time. There were lots of people interested in information on breeding from their own dogs for the first time and in any litters that may be on the horizon who were able to get practical advice from committee and Club members.
Key to the success of the day was the amount of help and goodwill we received from numerous sources. We must thank Carmel Humphreys for kindly hosting the event in the beautiful setting of Dromin House without whom none of this would have been possible, to Richard Filgate for donating the marquees and keeping us dry, to O’Dowd’s veterinary in Louth who did great work promoting the event locally, running the rally-o and providing advice and help on the day, to Mary Wendland and Jim Stephens from Wenden boarding kennels who became the unofficial photographers of the day in addition to being show judges, selling raffle tickets and giving obedience talks! to the Louth gun club and vintage tractor club who worked tirelessly behind the scenes and in particular did a fabulous job organising the scurry, to Brambles cafe for keeping us warm with their hot teas, coffees and other goodies, to for their excellent agility demonstration and finally to all those who kindly sponsored our raffle, The Irish Landmark Trust, Wenden Kennels, O’Dowd vets, The Village Saloon Dromin, to Red Mills for the huge bags of dog food.I’m sure there’s someone we’ve forgotten but as you can see there’s a huge amount of goodwill that goes into making an event like this happen and we are truly grateful to all those involved. Without them this could not have happened.

So the first Club event in some time will take place in just a couple of weeks time on the 11th of May at 12:00 in Dromin House, Dromin, County Louth. 
On the day we’ll have plenty to entertain, with scurries kindly supported by the Dunleer gun club, free for all agility classes, guest lectures, dog grooming demonstration and lots more.
